Although the pristine sand and water of Ocracoke may still be well-kept secrets, the Back Porch Restaurant and fine gourmet dining have long been synonymous for local residents and regular island visitors and continues to surprise island newcomers. When Daphne and Howard Bennink purchased the Back Porch in 1998, they created their long-term plan: a classy, elegant yet inviting and unforgettable dining experience. Great food and service have always been critical. Only the highest quality meat, fish and produce are served. Everything is made from scratch from the toasty warm bread to the luscious desserts. Local seafood stars on the eclectic, seasonal menu. In fact, even the staff is locally grown and expert at guiding diners through the extensive wine list and unique bill of fare. Later, the Benninks added a spacious wine/cocktail bar where thirsty patrons can sip homemade watermelon coolers and mojitos as well as traditional premium cocktails, select appetizers from the expanded menu, or try a featured wine by the glass. This year, in addition to the stunning redesign of the interior and exterior, there is a new bar menu replete with casual offerings like the clam pizza (a nod to Daphne’s NY roots) and local fish and chips. A covered outdoor patio completes the charming scene - and of course, the large screened “back porch” is still a favorite dining spot.
The Back Porch is open mid-April through November and also offers both on and off premise catering. Phone 252-928-6401 for information and reservations. |
