Theories abound about the origin of the wild ponies that have roamed the salt marshes for 200 years. Today, the National Park Service manages the herd that lives in a penned area here. Ponies can be viewed from a wooden platform overlooking the fenced pasture. A donation box to support the feeding and care of the ponies is on-site and available at NPS Visitors Center on Ocracoke.
