Shopping in Truckee
By: Nancy Peek Ives

Overdosed on sun and scenery?  Shopping in Truckee can be a great change of pace. Tucked among taverns and restaurants, 30 or so tiny stores combine nostalgia and quality for some of the best boutique browsing this side of San Francisco.

The shops on Truckee’s historic Commercial Row are not only interesting; their ambiance is as exciting as the merchandise, and the entire downtown is an eclectic mix of modern and antique, with Victorian and Western thrown in.

The Truckee Hotel at the east end of Commercial Row is a perfect example. Originally a stage stop/hotel called the American House, later the Whitney House, this 116-year-old building houses a restaurant as well. The mountaineering store across from the hotel operates in a stone building that was once a blacksmith shop. The train depot hosts the visitor center, while the old wooden loading dock area is home to purveyors of Western wear, stained glass and outdoor gear.

Truckee’s art galleries are known around the world. Besides wonderful local pieces, they carry works by national and international artists. You will find imported Bohemian crystal, intricate baskets from tribes in Bali or authentic Navajo rugs.

Even the proverbial wind socks and banners are upscale and the T-shirts are classy. Prices aren’t out of line, and when it comes to fashion, “mountain casual” rules.

One popular store follows a cat theme. Another stocks only items from the Southwest. Yet another features authentic Tiffany lamps. Each stop offers a unique experience, from herbs to fine art, jewelry and gifts to housewares and furniture. Couches made from wagon wheels or carved wooden tables that look like ponds filled with swimming trout blur the line between furnishings and art. Dramatic wall hangings, lamps and bird feeders also straddle the distinction.

Shops display shoes, baggy shirts, Levis and “one of the largest selections of Pendleton shirts in northern California.” Resort wear is abundant, while hard-to-find items such as Brighton leather handbags and tooled leather boots are offered in dozens of styles and colors.

A children’s shop delights kids of all ages, selling everything from bassinets to toys. Craft-minded folks love the stitchwork shop. A well-stocked Christmas store celebrates the holidays all year around, and a few doors away artisans blow beautiful glass, twist gold or cast bronze. Technical items can be found in the kitchen shop displayed in a cozy setting.

On nearby West River Street, a consignment sport shop and well-stocked book store can be found, as well as a handful of delightful eateries.

A short venture west along Donner Pass Road reveals several small centers with  more modern appeal. About a dozen factory outlets flourish near I-80 at the Donner Pass exit.
