Soaring high in a Carolina blue sky, hundreds of feet above the Atlantic, is exhilarating and breathtaking – a thrill of the finest sort. Leaping waves on a jet ski (there are hour and half-hour rates) and gliding through the water on a banana boat is wicked fun, too – certain to be the best part of your vacation. The banana boat leaves the beach, heads offshore, and skirts the coast for a couple of miles. Views are exceptional. The double banana doesn’t tip and is the ideal choice for the less adventurous.
Ocean Watersports, on the beach at Third Avenue South in Myrtle Beach, was founded in 1981 and has earned the unswerving loyalty of customers that return year after year – often with friends in tow.
Perhaps because it requires no training, parasailing is probably the most popular of the water- bound opportunities provided by Ocean Watersports. An experienced captain and crew do all the work. Participants, carefully harnessed to a specially designed parachute, leave and return from the back of the boat. You don’t even have to hold on! The boat zooms off, lifting the fliers into the air. There are no age or fitness requirements, and participants can fly up to three at a time. There is a liberal maximum weight limit that varies with wind conditions.
Always, safety is paramount. Captains have over 75 years combined experience and insist on the latest in marine and parasailing equipment.
Important facts aside, floating weightlessly above the ocean delivers a feeling hard to describe. “It’s just not possible to express the joy of parasailing until one actually experiences it,” said one summer customer. “As you climb higher and higher, it gets very quiet and peaceful. Looking over miles of open ocean, you feel like a bird must feel. And, unless you want to, you don’t even have to get your feet wet!”
Here’s a fun fact! Recent happy customers include Josh and Anna Duggar. Josh is the oldest child of Duggar family fame on the popular TLC television series, “18 Kids and Counting.” Josh and his new bride spent their honeymoon in Myrtle Beach. Anna was overheard telling her new husband the parasailing and banana boat rides were the most fun things she had ever done.
Easter through October, Ocean Watersports opens at 9am. Earlier appointments may be available with reservations. Mornings seem to offer the best chance for spotting sea turtles and dolphins at play.
