Art League of Ocean City
By: Kerin Magill

The Art League of Ocean City, tucked behind the water tower on 94th Street bayside, is a haven for those who love art – whether you’re a creative soul or just appreciate the visions of others who are. A fixture in Ocean City since the 1960s, the Art League has been in its current home since 1984. According to president Rina Thaler, the league now has about 400 members as well as more than 30 loyal businesses who serve as sponsors.

The building serves as the center for the visual arts in Ocean City, and contains gallery and classroom space. As Ocean City’s population has grown, so has the Art League, according to Thaler. “We offer another dimension to what’s available here at the beach,” she says.

The gallery overflows with original artwork by local artists. Exhibits change monthly and include: paintings, drawings, mixed media, photography and three-dimensional works; insuring a wide variety of art for visitors.

Opening receptions for the exhibits are generally held the first Friday of each month from 5pm to 7pm (except July, see below). The receptions are free and open to the public, and light refreshments are served. The shows are judged and twice yearly juried, and prizes are awarded.

Throughout the year, art workshops and lectures offer opportunities to learn about a wide variety of topics and mediums. Local, regional and nationally known artists instruct classes for adults and children from beginner to advanced levels. Workshops are open to the public, and there is a discount on fees for league members.

The league’s outreach into the community doesn’t end with exhibits and workshops.  “Art with a Heart” is an Art League program which pairs art with local charities to help raise needed funds. An annual scholarship has been established to benefit a local student planning to pursue an education in the arts.

The third annual “Artists Paint O.C.,” an outdoor painting event, will bring the art to the people. The event will take place from July 11-13 in the downtown and boardwalk area. Artists will be painting the local scenery on July 11 and 12. The July exhibit opening reception will coincide with the event, on Friday July 11 from 5-7pm at the gallery on 94th St. The event will culminate with an outdoor art show of the works produced by the artists on Sunday July 13 at the Somerset Street Plaza.

The Art League of Ocean City is located at 502 94th St., next to the tennis courts. The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from  11-4pm, and Saturday and Sunday from  1-4pm.  For more information or to become a member, call 410-524-9433 or go to  www.artleagueofoceancity.org
