Lights … Camera … and plenty of fun. That’s what Flashback Old Time Photos is all about, and like its antique portraits, its resounding success is due to a partnership that’s as picture-perfect as they come.
The men behind the scenes are Jack Glaser and Patrick Poloney. Together they nurtured a vision into the thriving business it is today and established a favorite resort attraction in the process.
It was 30 years ago when Flashback Photos first opened its doors. Back then, Poloney was known as the “guy with the camera.”
“I always had one with me,” he said. “I was always interested in photography and took pictures wherever I went.”
His interest ultimately led him to apply for a job with Glaser. He was hired as a photographer in the 1st Street store and is now a managing partner overseeing all three Ocean City locations.
“He’s the technical genius behind Flashback Photos,” Glaser said. “He makes sure we have the best technology, costumes and customer service. Patrick keeps us on the cutting edge.”
That’s a tremendous accomplishment considering the changes that have occurred within the industry and the business itself. During their partnership, Glaser and Poloney have watched Flashback Photos mature from a young operation to a company with 70 cameras, 150 summertime employees and six studios in three states. They are true pioneers, helping to develop and test technology that is currently in use industry-wide, and it shows. Today, their work rivals that of any professional portrait studio, and they have the awards and the testimonials to prove it. “For a lot of our customers, we are their family photographer,” Poloney said. “This isn’t a fad. We have families who have been coming here for 10 years running. We’ve seen their kids grow up, and now we’re starting on the next generation.”
In fact, family portraits account for the majority of Flashback Photos’ business and there has always been a strong demand for those featuring children. It’s one of the many things that the studios do best, but Poloney is quick to give credit where credit is due. “We have a dedicated staff of professionals who return year after year and who not only produce our portraits but who really make the experience fun for everyone.”
And of course there’s Poloney’s lasting association with Glaser. There aren’t many people who make history for a living, but to the delight of thousands, this Flashback Old Time Photos partnership does so every day.
