For the complete Lost Colony experience, visit all three unique attractions at Fort Raleigh on the north end of Roanoke Island. Journey into history, mystery, and legend as your feet tread the very ground of America’s English beginnings. Each attraction: Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, The Elizabethan Gardens, and The Lost Colony outdoor drama takes you into the story of English attempts at colonization and the unsolved mystery of the colonists.
As you enter the park, follow the winding road to the visitor center. Featured inside, the Elizabethan Room exhibits the original oak paneling and stone fireplace from a 16th-century house of the kind lived in by the Roanoke colony investors. A gallery showcases artifacts excavated from the site, exhibits on the colonists and Elizabethan life, and copies of watercolors painted by John White, governor of The Colony. A short film depicts the story of England’s ill-fated settlement.
Outside, towering loblolly pines and live oaks draped in Spanish moss stir your imagination. An earthen fort is a prominent feature of the park. |
