The village of Norge came into being at the turn of the 20th century in a sparsely populated area of James City County when a group of unhappy Scandinavians, mostly Norwegians, moved from the Midwest at the invitation of fellow countryman Carl M. Bergh, a Chesapeake and Ohio land agent. In addition to their homes, they erected churches, stores and other businesses, the little village having approximately 25 buildings by 1909.
Although Norge (Norwegian for Norway) has grown considerably from those early beginnings, it still has that small village appearance. A number of unique businesses have set up shop within view of such legacies as the picturesque Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, over 100 years old, and the railroad depot that dates from the 1880’s.
he Williamsburg Doll Factory, Williamsburg Wicker & Rattan Shoppe and Tumblerstore are all within a block of each other along Richmond Road (Route 60), the modern day Main Street of the old village. |
